Greenhouse gas emissions from Irish power generation and industrial companies covered by the EU Emissions Trading System decreased by 17% or 2.4 million tonnes last year, according to a new report from the European Commission and Environmental Protection Agency.

Reacting to the decrease, EPA Director General Laura Burke said decarbonisation of power generation must continue to be prioritised. Industrial emissions decreased by just over 6% in 2023 compared with 2022. Within this sector the cement industry recorded a 6.2% decrease, mainly due to a drop in production.

Aviation emission in 2023 amounted to over 11 million tonnes, which is still lower than the pre-pandemic levels of 12.8 million tonnes.
