RTÉ board members raised concerns late last year that the broadcaster is at risk of “reckless trading”. The issue was raised with the Department of Media by Siún Ní Raghallaigh, former chair of the board, during an November RTÉ board meeting. The concerns were prompted by an update on RTÉ's cash flow situation and budget for 2024, presented by Mike Fives, group financial controller of RTÉ.
The national broadcaster is estimated to require €61 million in interim funding until the end of 2024 due to a €21 million shortfall in licence fee revenue and a projected €40 million financial shortfall
