Dawn and Eric Palmer traded on markets before opening a shop

The owners of a Clifton shop have said the time is right for them to say farewell to customers after nearly 40 years of selling greeting cards. Dawn and Eric Palmer started as market traders in Clifton and Arnold in 1985, getting up at 4am to set up a 30ft stall.

"It's time. I'm 65 this year so it's early retirement for me but Eric is eight years older so it's late for him. It's just getting harder to earn a living now when you're a small business but in the same vein, it's been a good business. We have made lifelong friends doing it." She is looking forward to spending more time with her family. "We have three granddaughters now and they are growing up far too fast so it's just that time with friends and family. The fact it's retail and we've been doing it for nearly 40 years, it's all the Mother's Days, all the Father's Days, all the Christmasses, all the times you're supposed to be your family are the times we're busiest.
