Stocks are edging lower on Wall Street in afternoon trading as traders return from a long holiday weekend to face a relatively quiet week.

The S&P 500 fell 0.2 per cent. The index is coming off its second weekly gain. The Dow Jones lost 0.3 per cent, to 34,741 as of 2:55 p.m. Eastern. The Nasdaq was up 0.1 per cent. The Australian sharemarket is set to edge lower, with futures at 5.03am AEST pointing to a dip of 3 points at the open. The ASXThe Australian dollar fell sharply to be 1.3 per cent lower at 63.79 US cents at 5.14am AEST.Markets in the US were closed Monday for the Labor Day holiday.

Investors have a few economic reports to look forward to this week and the latest round of corporate earnings is essentially finished. Last week, investors were busy reviewing a heavy load of economic data as they try to get a better picture of the economy. Much of the information fuelled hopes that the Fed might moderate interest rate increases to fight inflation, which has been easing for months.Bond yields rose Tuesday. The yield on the 10-year Treasury, which influences interest rates on mortgages and other loans, rose to 4.26 per cent from 4.18 per cent late Friday.
