The Flames have begun their retool after so many players said they wanted out, trading Tyler Toffoli to the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday. They still have a few more free agents next season to worry about with Elias Lindholm, Noah Hanifin, and Mikael Backlund, so they’ll need to navigate that and figure out what their game plan is moving forward.
Tyler Yaremchuk and Frank Seravalli were joined by Ryan Pinder to talk about the Flames and what they should do next after the Toffoli trade.This is a very philosophical “where are the Flames, what should they do?” type chat, and I think what’s transpired the last three weeks, or even one week, it’s all happening at once, I think it has a lot of people saying “Look, they need to at least start getting considerably younger”.
If you can get two picks in the teens, I think you’ve really got a chance to move this franchise forward, not just for a year or two, but for a decade. You’re not going to get exactly the same, but you look at what 2003 did for the Anaheim Ducks with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry. Those two weren’t top 10 picks, those were one in the teens and one in the twenties. I would love to see them try to add that.
Does the market bear that for Noah Hanifin? I would think so. A first and two seconds seems to be the currency for a solid top-four defenseman, and it’s what the Flames paid for Hamonic, it’s what you saw Hampus Lindholm command when he went from Anaheim to Boston, it’s also what we saw the Flames give up for a young Dougie Hamilton. All different kinds of D, but I would suggest if you could get in there, that would be my preference. Are the Flames willing to do that? That’s different.
Hanifin is obviously not the same, and you saw that they were able to rip the band-aid off pretty quickly on Toffoli, Hanifin, Mikael Backlund, it’s got to be Hanifin to bring back the first.100%, and I would think Backlund’s a very nice part, and maybe it, under a certain set of circumstances, you can command a first, I just don’t know if now is it for a guy that’s a third line center on a contending team. Hanifin’s a top-four and maybe a top-pair guy for a lot of teams in this league.
